MagSafe compatibility: what buyers ask before an order

Magnetic phone accessories generate more pre-sale questions than any other category we make. That is not because the technology is complicated, but because two different attachment methods are usually described with the same words.

There are two ways a holder meets a phone

• Adhesive plate. A ring holder with an adhesive back sticks to the phone or to any case. This is why our standard ring models are listed as fitting any phone.
• Magnetic attachment. The holder attaches by magnet alone, which requires either a MagSafe-compatible phone, a MagSafe-compatible case, or a metal plate added between phone and case.

When a buyer asks about compatibility, the first thing to establish is which of these two they are selling. It changes the answer completely.

What MagSafe compatibility actually requires

MagSafe is a magnet array built into the phone or the case, arranged in a ring around the wireless charging coil. For a holder to be genuinely compatible it needs three things, not one:

1. A matching magnet array — a ring of magnets, not a single solid magnet. A single magnet positions the accessory by luck.
2. Correct alignment — the magnet ring has to line up with the phone's array, so the holder sits centred rather than off to one side.
3. A magnetic field strong enough to hold through a case — this is measured, and it is why we publish the figure for our models (about 4,100 GS on the standard ring models) instead of saying “strong magnet”.

Note the word compatible. There is a difference between an accessory that works with a MagSafe phone and one carrying an Apple certification. We state the first and do not claim the second.

Wireless charging: the question that causes returns

A magnetic accessory sits directly over the wireless charging coil. That is the same area the charger needs to reach. Three outcomes are possible:

This is why honest product copy matters. A page that says “works with wireless charging” without describing the setup will produce returns, and returns cost more than the margin on the order.

Thick cases and car mounts

• Case thickness matters more than magnet strength alone. A 3 mm rugged case eats a large part of the magnetic field.
• For thick cases, use a double-sided model or one designed with a larger contact area.
• In a car, stiffness decides. A holder with a soft arm will let the phone droop on a bumpy road even if the magnet is strong.

Five tests to run on the sample, not on the batch

1. Attach the holder to your own phone and shake it — hard, over a sofa.
2. Place the phone on a wireless charger with the holder fitted, and watch whether charging starts and continues.
3. Try it with the thickest case you plan to sell alongside it.
4. Hold an NFC payment or card against the phone and check that it still reads.
5. Open and close the hinge 200 times by hand. If it loosens noticeably, it will not survive 6,000.

What belongs on your product page

Buyers who sell online get fewer returns when the listing states, in plain words: the attachment method, the measured magnet strength, the thickness and weight, the materials, and whether wireless charging works and under which conditions.

Our own specifications are published the same way — for example 3.8 mm and 18 g for the flat ring holder, 4.5 mm and 25 g for the double-sided holder, N52 magnets measured at about 4,100 GS, and a SK7 hinge cycle tested beyond 6,000 movements.

The short version

Decide whether you are selling an adhesive attachment or a magnetic one. If it is magnetic, ask for the magnet array, the alignment and the measured strength. And test wireless charging on the sample before you commit to a batch.
